West Bromwich Albion has only ever had 3 Polish nationals play for the club. With the confirmed transfer of Kamil Grosicki to West Brom, I thought it was a good time to look back on some memorable, and some forgettable Polish players to have put on the famous blue and white stripes of the Baggies.
Arguably the most memorable of Polish nationals to play for the Albion is Tomasz Kuszczack. Beloved by fans, the shot stopper was affectionately known as the “Pole in goal” and made 35 appearances for West Brom, mostly coming in the 2005-06 season in the Premier League. Fans may remember his match winning save against Wigan Athletic in January 2006, voted save of the season by Match of The Day viewers. In the summer of 2006, Kuszczack left for Manchester United, with Paul McShane and Luke Steele coming the other way. The Keeper most recently played for Birmingham City and left the club at the end of the 18/19 season.
The last Polish player to put on Albion colours before Grosicki, was Grzegorz Krychowiak. The midfielder made 31 appearances for the Throstles in the torrid 17/18 in which West Brom were relegated from The Premier League. A great player on his day, Krychowiak was one of the biggest name players to sign for Albion in its recent history, signing on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. However, he would disappear in some games and be ineffective, especially as the season progressed and morale fell. Krychowiak now plays in Russia for Locamotiv Moscow.
Bartosz Ślusarski is the polish player who’s name most unrecognisable amongst West Brom fans. Signing on the 24th of August 2007, the Baggies paid Dyskobolia £680,000 for Ślusarski's services, but he only ever made one appearance for the club, playing in a 3-2 defeat to Colchester United. He remained at the club until 2009 spending a year on loan at Blackpool before leaving to return to Poland, where he stayed until the end of his career.
Fans of West Bromwich Albion and the club itself will be hoping Grosicki becomes the greatest polish player to play for West Brom. With his quick speed and creative flair (4th most chances created in the championship) Kamil Grosicki stands a good chance of becoming the Baggies new Polish hero.
